I don’t call them “Social Readers”, I call them “Spam Hoses”. They are the antithesis of Social: they are Antisocial, populating your News Feed with crap you don’t care about. Facebook is spectacularly good at doing that these days and I can feel a large, vitriolic post building on the subject. In fact, the OpenGraph is just SpamHose Rex: King of the Shit You Don’t Care About.

Could it be that the most annoying feature of Facebook isn’t catching on? Gosh. Who’da thunk?

Quite.

I cannot hate on these goddamn things enough and their bloody “App” identification when you finally succumb and click on one friend’s inadvertently shared embarrassing news article. Social Reading makes me antisocial. I don’t want to share stuff anymore. I want to see what my friends are up to in real life again, not what YouTube video they laughed so hard that they farted at, or what disgusting tripe they’re reading on Femail. Timeline killed the funny quip status update, the amusing thought of the day. Timeline sucks. Facebook’s 2012 idea of “Social” sucks.

Shit when did stuff “trend” on Facebook, anyway? God, identity crisis much?

I wish I could think of another company in the social space that stopped doing what it did so well in the interest of profit and then got usurped

N.B. I’m not calling Facebook Myspace, I’m just seeing cracks in Facebook (and I’m not the only one): I’m seeing users frustrated and annoying at “having” to use Facebook (you know why, and anyone who argues that you’re on Facebook by choice now is an idiot, because there is no other alternative); I’m seeing the least geeky of all my friends posting statuses like “Why is my News Feed full of shit?” (referring to those posts that say 30,000 people like this, why don’t you, you loser?). I’m curious about whether or not Facebook sees these cracks too.

…I guess that’s why you pay $1 billion for a photo sharing app with no revenue (SNARKYLOL).

Try it yourself: go to Facebook, search for Facebook, and filter it to Public Posts. Count the number of totally public statuses bitching about having to use Facebook…on Facebook.

The passive aggression is building, and it’s coinciding deliciously with Facebook’s IPO.
